What is Natura 2000?

The European Union has set itself the aim of arresting the decline of species and natural habitats that has continued over the past decades. Europe’s natural heritage encompasses an immense diversity of climate zones and landscapes of outstanding natural beauty. The populations of many species are dramatically declining due to the continued exploitation of landscape and the deterioration of habitats. Today, half of all species of mammals and a third of reptiles, birds and fish are under threat of extinction.
