Biomass Action Plan

The European Commission has presented its Biomass Action Plan, a coordinated concept in renewable energy policy. The Biomass Action Plan outlines how the use of biomass energy from wood, waste and agricultural crops can be promoted by creating economic incentives and removing obstacles to the development of the market. By implementing these steps, Europe can reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, cut its greenhouse gas emissions and stimulate economic activity in rural areas.

The gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine has highlighted once again the need for secure energy supplies. Specifically, measures are needed to reduce Europe’s dependence on fossil imported fossil fuels. This is why Federal Minister Josef Pröll placed the Biomass Action Plan on the agenda at the Council of Agriculture Ministers on 23/24 January 2006 in Brussels.

The Biomass Action Plan is a strong first coordinating step along this path. It describes measures for encouraging the use of biomass for heat and electricity generation and in transport, comprehensive measures relating to biomass supply and research, and also financial issues.

Austria has been promoting energy production from sustainable resources for a number of years, and therefore boasts an above-average proportion of this kind of energy – particularly in the area of solid biomass. Austria, together with Sweden, is also a forerunner in the European Union in the admixture of biomass to fuel.
