Monitoring of Sustainable Development in Austria: Development of the Indicator Set

The Austrian Strategy of Sustainable Development (2002) requires the development of a set of indicators for the overall assessment of sustainable development in Austria, which should be based on a systematic approach.

It was worked out in several steps.
On the topic "Monitoring sustainable development in Austria: A systematic approach and topics" a workshop was held at the invitation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management on 30 September 2003. The goal of the workshop was to develop the systematic approach, as it is requested in the Austrian Strategy of Sustainable Development. The list of subjects identified in this framework has been the starting point for the choice of indicators.

In a broad participatory process, in which experts for the theme areas, for indicators and interest groups were involved, the set of indicators for the overall assessment of sustainable development in Austria was worked out. In a report you can find more detailed information on the working process and the results of the workshops.

Printed versions of the reader providing information on the workshop of 30 September 2003 (it is containing an English summary) and of the report on Indicators for the monitoring of sustainable development in Austria can be ordered by Email: ingeborg.fiala@lebensministerium.at.
